Many a woman has been told her twins (or more) caused her incompetent cervix. Not true, says Dr. James Sumners.
“Delivery under 28 weeks occurs in less than 1% of singletons, about 4% of twins and 13% of triplets. Cervical incompetence is the major factor in the increase in this rate with multiples. However, if twinning alone caused CI, the rate of extreme prematurity should be sharply higher. Therefore, those patients who experience CI with twins must have some cervical factor (CI) that is independent of twinning,” he writes on his Facebook page.
